Meet our Team
Dr. Abernathy was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He moved to the Kansas City area in 1974 to attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He graduated from UMKC with a B.S. in Biology in 1978 and then earned his Dental Degree from the UMKC School of Dentistry in 1982 and has practiced in the Independence area ever since. He is a career long member of the American Dental Association, Missouri Dental Association, Greater Kansas City Dental Association and Eastern Jackson County Dental Society.
Dr. Abernathy is very active in our community and supports our various schools and sport teams. He also supports the Boys Scouts of America and is a honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

Bob and his wife Karen reside in Lee's Summit, Missouri and have been married since 1982. They have one son, Josh, who is in pre-dental studies at the University of Missouri.
In his spare time he enjoys any outdoor activity, restoring his old car, the Lake of the Ozarks and rooting for his Cardinals, Royals, Chiefs and MU Tigers. |
Registered Dental Hygiene
Karen - Dr. Abernathy's wife Karen graduated from the UMKC Dental Hygiene program in 1980 and has over 30 years of experience. Karen stays fit with aerobic exercise and daily workouts. She also enjoys traveling and word game and jigsaw puzzles.
Laura - Has been with us since graduating from UMKC Dental Hygiene School in 2002. She and her husband are raising their two young sons and enjoy the country life.
Marilyn - Graduated from UMKC Dental Hygiene School and has over 30 years experience. She and her husband have raised two boys and enjoy jogging and hiking. |

Office Manager
Jan - was the office manager when Dr. Abernathy opened his solo practice and has been with him ever since. Jan's father, brother and daughter are all dentists and she has over 30 years experience in the field. Her hobbies include traveling and spending time with family.
Reception / Insurance
Susi - has worked in the insurance field and at our office for the past eight years. She has raised two grown kids and enjoys her grandchildren and rooting for the Chiefs.

Assisting
Misty - has been a patient of ours since she was a little girl and our assistant for the last six years. She’s a newlywed and enjoys role playing games, movies and remodeling her new home.
I feel very fortunate to work with my outstanding staff. All of us have been together for many years. Their loyalty and our team approach assure our patients they will see the usual and familiar smiling faces at their appointments. I have been blessed that for over 25 years, our practice has continually grown thanks to my patients kind referrals of friends and family. All of our Dental Laboratory work and material and supply purchases are always kept here in the Kansas City area.
